Question Advice re software which converts AVI and other formats to ensure quality DVD movies

I have Windows XP (Home Ed), w/Windows Media; Musicmatch; Real Player, and God only knows what else is in there. I can't seem to get the hang of Windows Media, but everything else is okay. I have two drives, 16xDVD-ROM & 16xDVD+/-RW and some-thing called 'Power DVD Software Decoding for DVD Drives" which I've never used, and, because I told the salesperson when I bought the PC that I wanted to hook up a synthesizer keyboard, she said I needed an additional sound card or something called Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS, PCI w/Dolby Digital EX, IEEE1394, 7.1 channel, THX cert, which I checked out for the first time last night, and, to me, it appears to be yet one more media device. I've been successfully failing at downloading since I bought my computer until I found LimeWire a couple days ago, and I'm happy to say I downloaded my first movie last night. I noticed that most of the movies had "avi" in the search description, and not being cyberfluent, I had to look it up on the Internet to see what it meant. I read that the avi format could affect the quality of a video/movie when writing to a DVD, and some computers may require software to solve the problem. I was able to watch the movie on LimeWire's media player before burning a DVD, and the contrast was a little light, and the audio cut in and out for a few seconds at a time during the first 25 minutes and then it was okay. It might have been static if that sounds right. Because of those things, I didn't burn the DVD and thought I'd look into the type of software I might need.
Anyway, I hope this is enough info to have fulfilled the terms & conditions of the Forum, and for someone to advise me if I will need to get software to convert various formats before I begin recording movies to DVDS I read about a program called Blaze Media Pro that sounded like it covered just about everything, but being a Newbie, I decided to ask for help from the experts. So, if anyone can recommend a program that 's fast, efficient and, more importantly, 'anticerebral' please post a response or send me an e-mail.

I like xilisoft's video converter does many formats including real player and also runs on 64 bit for when you take that plunge.

It's good that you took a look at the video file first. Many files are not what they claim to be, and many files are simply not worthy of transferring to disc.

Converting movies from AVI to DVD or VCD can be quite time consuming...I also use TMPGENC; although I use virtual dub to rip the audio separately and then remux the audio and video with TMPGENC DVD Author.

At Wal-Mart, you can get a DVD player that will play AVI movies (DivX format, the most common type) for $37. No conversion necessary! Just burn the AVIs to DVDR and go! This way, you can fit 5 or 6 full length movies on one disc and not have to worry about losing quality during conversion.

Good Luck!

I'm new to this site, and needed some help in finding out how to post a new forum or to get someone to answer my questions. I need to know the basics on how to burn a copy-protected DVD from my hard drive. I have Nero 7, DVD decrypter and DVD Shrink, and I have already gotten the DVD downloaded to my hard drive, but now I need to know how to get it onto a dick for my personal collection. I am also having the problem of my DVD burner not being recognized when I try to select it for burning DVD's. I know it works because I install it my self just a few weeks ago, and have been burning cd's on it for the last week. What gives? Please help. :-(

It sounds like you have the process down and you are just having problems with your burner...is it Nero that won't recognize your burner?

Is it an internal or external burner?

What happens when you open Nero and choose 'Get System Info' (under 'Extras')?

Good Luck
