VLC doesn't burn DVDs
If you use the search (top right, next to quick links) to look for burn to DVD or similar, you'll find lots of threads which will give you lots of peoples' opinions on different software etc.

If you have a drive that burns disks, check the software CDs that came with it.
If you don't have such a drive, why even ask about it? ;]

Particular type? So, I guess you need additional software to convert it.
If your burner software is Nero there are upgrades available,
otherwise you can get all the info you need at videohelp.com

Don't be so defensive. You asked for free software, and that can mean what
you have already. Some of the free stuff you get with a burner does work.

Look for the topics on "DVD Authoring" at videohelp.
That's where you can find info on free tools and how to use them.

If you use CD-R disks, then you will need to convert the file to the MPEG-1
format and then burn the disk in the VCD or SVCD format. This may mean you
will have to split the movie in half too, as it is usually too large for one disk.

Look up the tutorials on authoring VCD disks on videohelp.com.
