Codex error

New to this so not sure if I am at fault. Downloads are fine, but when I go to play, I get an error in downloading codex. The sound plays just fine, but no picture, only a light show? Any ideas.

[GSpot Codec Information Appliance]

Find out which codec you need with that thing.
Open the video file with it.

Use Gspot. The name of the codec you need will appear in there when you open the video file with it.
