DVD converting
 

hi I have been burning dvd using nero 7. I also have dvd santa,
As I find nero slow transcoding should i use zillsoft video converter to
convert files as I can do this while nero is transcoding another file but
when I tried using video converter it split video and audio how do I match these back up to burn 100% correct and what is correct dvd file for burn is it dvd vob.
also nero locks transcoding some avi files do I need codecs of some kind
hope someone can help an old novice in the techno world trying thanks all

Transcoding is a resource-intensive operation. You should NOT use two programs to transcode two different files at the same time. It will slow your computer down to a crawl and may very well be why you are having sync problems. One of the reasons that can occur is if you're overworking your computer during transcoding. Some programs need all of the juice your CPU can give. Check out what percentage of your CPU the program is utilizing in Task Manager. If your computer is sluggish, I would leave your computer alone during transcoding.

Nero should give you relatively fast results. Transcoding is also a slow process. The program I use gives excellent results and takes about 5 hours for a full length film. That's using multi-pass encoding, which gives better results than any 'one-click' transcoder, i.e. Nero, WinAvi, etc. can give. Many people run these apps while they sleep.

VOB files are indeed the format you will burn to DVD.

On to codecs...I use a free program called AVICodec. I simply drag and drop my files into this program. It tells me what codecs I need, whether or not my system has them, and has links to the appropriate websites where I can download the codecs! Pretty amazing if you ask me.

I checked cpu usage it was 100% so I understand the speed of transcoding,
I also got AVI codec I see it tells you what codecs you have etc and file type and res etc, I will try not too use while transcoding but theres a queue too get on this bloomin pc in my house I will try and do at nite,I think i
have installed too many codec packs ace codecs and xp codecs maybe remove and start again one last thing in codec list I could not see dvd (*.vob) codec is this right thanks again for time and effort

I, too, initially went with the codec packs. I think you mentioned ACE? That one had my computer all screwed up. The encoders that I was using would crash if I had that codec pack installed. I would definitely recommend uninstalling and then installing individual codecs. If you download movies with Limewire, I would recommend the DivX and XviD codecs to start.

As for the DVD codec, it will probably be listed as MPEG2. If you take a VOB file and separate it into video and audio (this is called demultiplexing, or demuxing for short) you will get MPEG2 for the video portion. Standard formats for DVD audio are Linear PCM (.wav format...uncompressed) or AC3 (dolby digital format).

That's too bad that there's a line to use the computer... :D

I just had cable TV installed today. That should keep the wife away from MY computer! :cheesy:
