The New Xolox I think the new Xolox is awesome. Just gave it a run. I am quite unsure of the future of file sharing. There is no doubting it is here to stay. The gnutlla protocl I think has amazing potentiial, and it is great to see that potential put to use. With its ability to grow and expand, I think gnutlla might be the file sharing network for the future. There are growind security questions, but I dont know anything about that stuff. I just would like the developers to know that I think it is awesome they are making a return. This beta...well, it rocks. Im not sure how much is going on behind the scene, but before you launch Xolox, it is important that it have hashing and ultrapeers support, as Xolox is gonna be big again, and it will offer the opportuninty to drive many new people to the gnutella network, and if it has these 2 advanced features, sharing will be better for all of us. Just my 2 cents. |

"but I dont know anything about that stuff" OK I see. "This beta...well, it rocks" WHY??? Tell me why! DETAILS! |

http://www.xolox.nl/features.html - thats why. And yes, hashing is being worked on by the time of public release as the site says, improving re-search queries etc. |

overall, xolox is ok. it looks ok, downloads reasonable well, and finishes downloads at a better rate than other clients. BUT, isn't customizable, keeps a lot hidden, doesn't have as many features as other clients, has few search results even if it is persistently searching, and doesn't even have partial sharing (since only other xolox clients can do that & they're few & far between). |

You people are like AOL users, you need to get a clue! Searches don't "stop", they keep returning results even after you turn your computer off! Once you send a search down the network, and it's called a "query" the query travels down the network through each node & the nodes that are connected to that node, branching out all over the place. Sometimes you may even get your own query returned past your box! (did I lose you yet?) A query hit has a TTL (Time To Live) of about 7 and that is a setting on REAL clients. So it will be passed by up to 7 nodes then die. NOT 7 TOTAL NODES! Think about the branching, use those nurons. It's about 10,000 or so nodes later that your search dies. If you turned your computer off after sending out a query, those "search hit" results would travel back over the network trying to find you (they have a TTL also), and this takes up network bandwidth. So even if you pressed a "stop" button, the results come back but are just ignored by your client. Now if you send that same query again after only 10 seconds, do you think the old search query has reached all the nodes yet? You are still waiting for query "hits" to come back from the first one. Not knowing how all this works and flooding the network with searches is bad. However, if your client had a setting to limit the time on re-searches, you could set it and probably feel secure knowing it won't send another one for a while (like 3 or 5 minutes to get back all query hits). Why am I wasting my time posting to a bunch of people who don't care about the network and wouldn't understand this anyway. I see your eyes glazing over as you get boored and want another beer, or is it your football game is on? Go have a beer and forget this post even exists. And as for "the search results can find more hits for rare files" are you stupid? All queries are the same on Gnutella, XoloX does nothing special except if it is still flooding the network, and then your client is getting "special" attention while screwing up the network for everyone else. and "XoloX will simultaneously download different segments of the same file" so will other clients, and they let you know whats going on. Why not do it right and just have a little box that says "what do you want?" and then after you type in something, another button lights up and says "here it is", with no indication of what it's doing. Thanks for taking the responsibility to help keep the network flowing. Don't worry, someone else will do it for you, go have another beer. |

XoloX is the only Gnutella client that can find and download the files I want, by repeating the search queries. If there was another Gnutella client that worked as well as XoloX, I would be happy to use it, but there’s NOT. I was ready to leave Gnutella for less friendly networks (eDonkey, D.C.) and take my files with me when XoloX revived. No doubt that would make you happy, but it would make several uploaders unhappy. Xolox will only allow a max of five uploaders at a time, but those spaces are consistently full on my XoloX. I AM taking the responsibility to keep desirable files on the Gnutella network. If you like the idea of having nothing on the network but porn and some radio station’s top ten lists, then it would be a great idea to reduce searches, because that’s the kind of crap you find first. If on the other hand you’re done jacking-off and Brittany Spears song’s give you a headache, then you might want to use you’re your computer for more entertaining endeavors (feature films, series, programs). Incidentally, I prefer shooters (rum, gin), when I want alcohol in my system I don’t want to wait for beer (it’s too watery).

My issue is not with the search ending its with the search results vanishing as well. It would be nice if the search ended which I understand is necessary for the network not to be flooded, but for the results not to vanish AND for you to have the ability to manually redo the search with the results being added? to the results you already have. Just have a redo search button. |
