2 banner ad places? why not just the one?

howdy folks!
ok let me say first I understand that xolox is paid for by banner ads currently. and I didnt mind the one banner ad area at the top but now when doing searches I get a banner add there to? umm overkill? could we get perhaps a preferance selection fo where we want to see the adds? insted of 2 places? I really dont like haveing to maximize my xolox just to see the available mp3 selections. (a bit of a exageration yes. but thats how it feels).:D

Hope to see a reduction in adds somewhere. its starting to get a bit thick here in the ad lands....

I don't understand why people still use ads in their programs. It has been statistically proven that they don't work by several major ad companies. In fact it upsets most people more than anything else to have to put up with the damn things. Yet they are still trying to push them at us, now more than ever....that's overkill. :D

Then how do you suggest they generate revenue?

Ad banners may not be very effective but they get more people per dollar that more personal and effective percentage wise methods of advertizing, because of the large number of people exposed.

The best way to get money for freeware??? Well, that's the point. Freeware is FREEware. The program author can ask for donations or sell a super/pro version for money if needed.

how much money would you like to donate, enough to make up for everyone's share of the development cost?

thypentacle August 5th, 2002 11:35 AM

I'd donate 5 bucks, and if everyone that uses Xolox donated even just 1 dollar, that would surely be enough cash do improve the software. It's just the only way I see this working. After all, there are so many other sharing apps out there now with zero ads and no spyware either that it seems self defeating to try it now. On top of that, there's even warez easily available of pro versions of Limewire, Bearshare, and Kazaa.

As most people know most "pro" versions of Gnutella servants contain adware, spyware, or something of the sort. Kazaa is one that is especially known for installing such programs. (unless you get Kazaa Lite - but that is not the super complete version) Those programs can be removed but they come back and are a pain.

why put ads in the client? Why not just the site?

I don't think that would bring in enough revinue.
