Hey peoples.
I'll cut to the chase: I've been using XoloX over this last weekend, and I've noticed horrible download speeds. Before you pass judgement, though, consider this:
1. My upload speed is on max
2. It's not my computer. Previous to this I used gnutella networks, specifically WinMX, then KaZaA. I left them for reasons I shant address here.
3. No-one is uploading from me, or at least listed in the upload window.
4. When I check on the status of my connection, I notice my computer is downloading something massive, taking almost all of my bandwith. It is also uploading quite a bit too. I have MEGS unaccounted for. (spooky...)
5. XoloX keeps giving me these fatal errors. In fact, this is my second attempt writing this. During the first attempt, Xolox gave me a fatal error message, I closed it as I successfully had done in the past. Next thing I know, my computer is battered, slaughtered, massacered with pop-up windows (at least 150).

This is all VERY spooky to me (especially the mysterious upload'n download'n part) and I would love some input, or fellow stories, or best yet, advice.

I think you still ahve some spyware laft on your system from before. Get Ad-Ware to remove any.

As for your download speed, have you considered that you might be downloading from a 5.6k? There are alot of them out there.

Thanks for replyin antihedron. Yah, I got Ad-Aware because of my previous history with KaZaA (kinda like goin to the doc for an STD test), and I just ran it the deepest it would check (forgive this grammer killing fool). Well all it grabbed up was some cookies from some sites which we won't discuss here . About the 5.6k thing, I run on a 56k, and always have, even with Kazaa and WinMX. They kicked this XoloX where it hurts in terms of speed, but yet my computer's bandwidth is stretched to the limits when I open it up. It really really really seems that the XoloX program is downloading something like mad (I count at least 5-10 megs). Not even Kazaa's spyware pushed my connection that hard. Anyone else have these problems? Or is there anyone a bit more computer literate who might know why XoloX hates me and tries to kill me at night (well, not yet, but it sure does hate me)? Sorry, I really hate it when I write really long paragraphs.

From what I can remember, Xolox was originally designed for people with broadband connections. It works just fine with 5.6k, but some of Xolox's most useful features like downloading from multiple hoasts only helps if you have extra bandwidth. Xolox also does alot of bacground stuff like resending searches (can be turned off) and searching for additional hoasts for files you are already downloading. On the other hand, Xolox can really help with trying to download rare files.

I just installed xolox today. I have no uploads or downloads currently going yet I'm sending and receiving bytes like crazy. This was never a problem before I installed this program. wtf?

Alright. I closed xolox and ran ad-aware and removed all spyware. I unchecked the requery box in preferences. I'm still sending and receiving so much data that there is hardly any bandwidth left for sending and receiving files. It takes 1-2 mins. to just post a message. I have no idea what this mysterious information is that is coming and going. One ad at the top of the screen does not account for all of this. I achieve 0.8kps download speed.

My connection returns to normal when I close this program. I guess the search for decent file sharing continues...

That bandwidth is being used by the network in general. Gnutella relies on each individual computer to relay information, so your computer's bandwidth is being used to transfer information regardless of weather you are doing anything.

all right, i'm a newbie at all this, but i've got to back steve up. i've got high-speed internet and i guess my computer was getting used as a super peer or whatever. all i know is when xolox was running i couldn't do squat, including use xolox. and what good is that? funny thing, it was fine at first, downloaded a bunch of stuff, but then it started using 75-100% of my capacity, even after shutting down xolox!

full disclosure, i also downloaded kazaa (grr, didn't know about spyware) but not until after problems started w/ xolox.

Windows has some memory leaks that seem to come into effect when Xolox is run. As each version of Windows has different memory leaks some seem to have more problems with memory allocation and Xolox. WinME is noted to have some of the worst memory problems with Xolox. Use a memory managment program to help return memory lost to leaks, as this effects many programs besides Xolox.

Xolox tries to flood Gnutella with request from you and other Xolox users. Well, this worked 6 month ago when you could even argue that XoloX was helping the network. Now with Ultrapeers and spam blocking, Xolox is only blocking the network. Last version may have corrected this behaviour, as all good clients were thinking to ban abusers. The last evil clients are Qtraxmax and Shareaza. their developpers don't even reply to other clients.

Bearshare (who implemented client blocking), Limewire, Gnucleus, Xolox and GT-Gnutella developpers are meeting those days to think about a way to block abusing clients, and there are 2 options. One would be to implement certification in their client and block any other client (good thinking clients may also receive certification). This is quite uneasy to do, but DMCA may be on their side. Another option would be for each user to get certification to use Gnutella. The latter seems to be the final response. The certification may be implemented seemlessly when you install your client (from those trustfull list), so you may not have to go get one. When running clients with source aviable, you may not be able to compile different exe and have the certification, so this is sad for individual developpers.
