Arrow Napster Vet NewTo Xolox

Hi there,
I've just got up and running with Xolox, and like what I see SO FAR. Like I said I'm a Napster vet from the old school if you will. Right now I'm using WinMX and like it. It's becoming busy the price with popularity.
I really like the concept that Xolox puts forward. Not to sound like a comercial this is what P2P should be.
Major complaint...dam it's slow and I have DSL, and doesn't seem to have as many files as WinMx which could be due to the newness factor.
Anway so far so good.
Peace Out

Xolox runns on the Gnutella network, a network that many other servents also use. Even if only one person was using Xolox and everyone elso was using another Gnurella servent, the results would be the same (ignoring differences in proformance between servents). There are quite a few users on the Gnutella network. The reason you see less results on the Gnutella network than on Napster is rooted in the mechanics behind Gnutella. Napster used a central server to list where all the files are, so when you search you get every possable match available. Gnutella has no central server, so when you search you are asking the hosts you are connected to, who ask the hosts they are connected to, and so on. This is usually limited to only looking a few layers, so everyone's computers (who relay information) do not get overloaded. Although a central server does make things nice, it also makes a good target for law suits. It is a trade off between the ability to exist and optimal performance.

I too started out with Napster, way back when. I've used Morpheus from the start, Grokster, Lime Wire, blah, blah, blah. Xolox has the potential to be very, very good. I think we should hold off in our judgments, etc., and give it a chance. I'm running @ 52,000bps, the best I can get on this dial-up modem of mine and this site still seems very slow right now. Perhaps that's the nature of Gnutilla. But I like the concept of sharing everything I have on my harddrive. I like sharing software as well as MP3's.

In my opinion, you really can't experiance Xolox's true potential unles you have broadband. There are too many things that Xolox does that are only useful if you have the bandwidth for it to have an effect.
