lock ups

Hi- I've got an amd 475mhz with 128megs of ram, and xolox locks up quite a bit and is a total resource hog.

For such a simply program, why does it gobble all the memory?

Hi!

You are running Windows? w2k I suppose...

You wonder about the usage of Xolox...

128 MB is today minimun for windows (especially for newer versions like w2k, or XP!), the most of your ram is reserved or needed by your OS... and you connect to the Internet, your provider software is running, xolox is running and may be you are surfing etc.

So if you want to run progs without using wour swap file (on your HD!), then you must upgrade to at least 192 MB ram!

Yes Xolox is a simple prog, but windows isnīt...

A fresh defrag and a program like Memturbo can do wonders too.

just a warning

I too love memturbo, but when I started using Windows ME. (A clean install.) Memturbo slowed down hard drive access a lot. I know that it works well on Wi***-98-XP, but for some reason, WinME runs better and faster without it.

Just my two cents.

Also, everyone seems to think that windows ME is crap, but I find it to be no more unstable than win98se. It sure runs faster anyway. As for Windows XP, it's not as fast on my computer as WinME. Most likely I need more RAM for WinXP to run faster but I'm maxed out so WinME will have to do.

Scattered

Files download from share sites often end up spread out on your HD. Fresh downloads fill the empty spaces on the HD, and if you are downloading different files at the same time the peaces can end up sharing the same general area. The computer uses more RAM to read a file that is in peaces all over your HD. If one of these files is one you are using or uploading, it will eat more RAM than if it has been organized. I have 320 MEG of RAM and I defrag once or twice a week. After I defrag I use 50 to 100 fewer MEG of total RAM while running Xolox.

PS

I use Windows ME too (factory installed). I found out about Memturbo after I had been using Xolox for a couple of months. My computer was bogging down and now I runs a lot smoother. I think Windows ME runs great, and at this time I have no interest in upgrading.
