Windows XP and downloading games

I just bought a new comp, and tried downloading games on XP when I finished downloading the game I COULDNT PLAY IT! I got a message saying that there was an error when I tried to install it, BUT when I downloaded it on Windows 98 I could play it and not get any messages about errors. HOW DO YOU GET RID OF THIS EROOR MESSAGE AND PLAY THE GAME? THX FOR REPLIES.
