There is nothing unlawful about sharing files that are not copyrighted or in the public domain. Laws vary a bit from country to country.

It is safe to start using LW; the default settings will prevent you from downloading most copyrighted stuff. You'll want to search and read a bit more in these forums so you can safely expand your music collection without depending on LW's filters, which are probably more strict than you need.

Thanks for your reply . I had limewire basic for the last 4 yrs with no problems then a friend of mine told me to try bitlord download dvd movies
so i did and about 6 months later i recieved a email from my isp AT&T saying i am using some sort of illegal downloads to stop right now or i can be prosecuted. this freaked me out so i unistalled bitlord to be safe then
i also thought maybe it can also be Limewire so i unistalled that also because i was scared to get in trouble but i just thought i would get other limewire users input to see if they ever had any problems with it . so i guess i feel better now and will install the basic limewire just for musice downloads only . i am in California what do you think?

I think California is a rather nice place to live.

There are some movies that are in the public domain and therefore can be shared without fear. Some independent film makers have begun a "see now, pay later" plan; if you like their movie, and then send them some money, they'll make more movies. These producers encourage file-sharing. The movie Blank (that's the actual name!) is a good example of this.

Comcast sent me the letter because I had seeded a CAM (camera) copy of a very recent movie that was popular among 16-24 year-olds. I now avoid movies that are currently playing in theaters. Also, many still-playing have not yet been put on DVD, so CAM copies are more likely, and CAMs are usually not very good and they are more likely to raise trouble with your ISP (under pressure from MPAA).

Was using LW Pro 4.18, then upgraded to a beta of LW5 Pro. That copy expired a couple months ago and I have not yet bothered to install the newest Basic version. I more often download movies, so lately have been using Vuze as my torrent client.

Elsewhere in the forums you can find info on tips and tricks to downloading music. Enjoy.

With all do respect Blackhorse, I have to disagree. You have, in my opinion, given restez1963 a false since of security with your answer. A little nonchalant, it's OK to download using Limewire if...

I realize everything you said about independent films and depending on Limewires filters to keep you from downloading copyrighted material, but lets just come out and say hey, if your on a public or private domain and your caught downloading copyrighted material, there is a chance you could get busted. Depends on how bad the Mafiaa wants you. Also who downloads the safe stuff?? Thats not what we're really after, is it?

It's a chance that we all take none the less. Your ISP has all the info in there back pockets so no one is really "safe". If they turn over your info, your toast.

The best you can do to stay anonymous is to use a SSL VPN, and stay away from public trackers if possible.

This is ONLY my Opinion, and am just trying to give another angle on the subject.

We can't live in a Paranoid state, so do what you think is best. There are millions of us that share hundreds and thousands of files on a daily basis, so do what feels right. (Seed till your Eys Bleed) LOL

Peace.

I didn't mean to convey a false sense of security. Indeed, I have found that when I throw caution to the wind, the wind usually throws it back at me with a vengance. So I agree, it's always a good idea to consider the 'better safe than sorry' angle.

I also agree that it is not wise to depend on LW's filters to keep one from dl'ing copyrighted material. I do believe that there are some people here who actually abide by all the laws of their country. However to be perfectly safe, they should probably join Netflix, which isn't very expensive. (And I should try more often to heed my own cautionary advice!)

My post was not ment as an insult in any way, just wanted to be up front with the OP.

This sort of activity isn't for the fant of heart, if you know what I'm sayin.

Some can and some can't. I'm one that can
