Limewire suggests that I install LimeWire Performance Enhancement for best performance. I fail to see how this additional application improves the performance of Limewire. Is this simply a marketing ploy or is LimeWire Performance Enhancement a relevant addition? It does not appear to improve the performance of anything except use system resources.

Look at impressive speed improvement and better internal optimization (including reduced memory footprint) on the Sun Java page. Follow the link, you'll see that it provides you access to the Java JRE 1.4.

You may alternatively install the JDK (which contains the JRE plus the Java SDK). Look on the Sun's web site for it.

Note that Java is installed side by side: there's no real upgrade, just a second distinct installation of the JRE or the JDK. You may use the control panel to select your active JRE, or use the JAVA_HOME environment variable to select which JRE or JDK you want to use.

So don't overwrite Java in the same directory for the upgrade:
- if you have enough storage, use a new folder, you may uninstall the elder version later without breaking the new install.
- else, uninstall Java prior to installing the new version if you want to specify the same directory as before.

Thanks for your response. Where do I start... Ok, that Java webstart application manager has stuff in it called Draw4, Notepad, Military Game, Swingset2. These appear to be nothing more than plain junk. Referening the File, Preferences it references the Java runtime version 1.4. I removed all the older versions in WindowsXP's add/remove programes. I'm having a difficult time finding the relationship between this silly utility and the performance between Limewire. To Limewires error, they suggest to install this but fail to provide any relevance of it in regards to Limewire.

Is this Java webstart supposed to run while Limewire is active or what?

Java WebStart is basically unneeded junk.

Its sort of a gaming/entertainment portal, and while a novel idea, is very much useless.

Go to your "Control Panel" in windows, then "Add/Remove Programs", select "Java WebStart" and >remove< it.

LimeWire will still run, Java apps will be uneffected, and stupid webstart will be gone.

Java WebStart is the Sun's implementation of JSR specification that is called JNLP (Java Network Launching Protocol).

The goal here is to define a standard way on how to use in a secure way a client application from a website. The main plus of Webstart (in fact the JNLP Spec), is that it deals with both the setup phasis to help user and with the update process to ease developper time.

The Sun's implementation is provide with a basic client that help users to see what they have previously used and can offline reuse for instance (if they've not chose to create a shortcut icon for a direct access )

At this time more than 130 great applications (no this are no tictactoe stuffs) are offered on various sites. Repository such as http://www.up2go.net for example now try to list them with a nice rating system ...

It will be great that instead of the proprietary setup process that limewire will be JNLP complient. Any newbie could just setup "the greatest tool on earth" with a single click !

I'm having great time with webstart just because this is definitivelly a thing that should have been done long time ago ...


If you run on an OSX 10.1+ you will be happy to know that you are already webstart complient, thansk goes here to Apple !
As beegin Java based Webstart runs on various OSes ... and we also see that alternative implementatio of the JNLP spec are also arising !
