Angry Error when installing PRO

PROBLEMS AFTER INSTALLING PRO

Running

XP Home SP2
P4 3.4Ghz
2Gb RAM
2x250GB SATA
ADSL connection via Linksys WAG54G (hard wired)

Thought I'd do the honest thing and upgrade to LIMEWIRE PRO.

Did this and got no action when I double clicked the new desktop icon.
Tried launching from the folder... still nothing.
Checked task manager to see if it was running somewhere in the back ground... no joy.

Downloaded BASIC windows English version, and got this error message.
"error reading setup initialisation file"

Then after reading a few posts, tried the international version and got this error
"the magic numer did not match"

Cleaned everything off, and tried it all over again with LIMEWIRE PRO.
Still no joy.

It is installed, but the program will not run.
I get the hourglass for 2 secs then my normal cursor.

Have I done something worng.

Please help, maybe I have wasted $18

Cheers

Gazza

Hi Gazza
You have a NAT router which blocks most of your incoming ports. It will need to have port 6346 opened (LW given permission to use that port) & also Force IP within LW. You should also configure XP firewall & any others you have here: http://www.limewire.com/english/content/firewalls.shtml to allow LW access. At present your LW is blocked from a full connection & possible totally blocked. One way to check is to go to this site: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ & if the page says it's a success then at least you can access outwards thru port 6346 which is the port LW uses.

You might also delete your LW using add/remove control panel or uninstaller that comes with the installer & try instead re-installing english version. That way you'll be able to use up-to-date Java which is very important for LW.The international version forces LW to use Java 1.3

Your installation errors might have been solved if you saw this thread sticky about updating your installshield engines: Installshield updaters
Also update your Java: Java 1.4.x OR Java 1.5 (take the JRE) Update your Java before re-installing LW!

Post Sorted

Cheers LOTR

I have tried all that you said already.

I have config'd the router already.

Just managed to get things running using the 1.5 version JRE.

Took ages to load up when I doubled clicked, got a blank window for 10 minutes then low and behold, all up and running!.

Sorted!

ADVICE TO ALL........ patience and stick with it!.

Cheers LOTR for a prompt reply

Gazza

Wow you're a step ahead of me. lol I forgot to tell you how to force IP within LW. If you haven't already see this: Force IP instructions for LW You NEED to do this. Actually I can't find any info on how to port forward your specific model of modem. You couldn't tell me could you. It would be very beneficial for other users. There's 2 others with connection probs just this week who have the same model as you.

It sounds strange LW should take 10 mins to load up properly & the blank screen doesn't sound healthy to me. If you continue having this issue then please post back & we'll see if we can sort it out.

Red face Still waiting 10-30mins

LOTR,

I forced the IP address when I upgraded to SP2, I then upgraded LW to PRO.

To cover all bases, I forwarded 6346 to 6349 TCP and UDP.
This is done from the admin screen on the WAG54G.
Done it both on "port range forwarding" and "port triggering" BOTH TCP and UDP.

Probably overkill, but it solved the SP2 problem.

IP address of the WAG54G for those unfamiliar is 192.168.1.1
and the screen for changing triggering is
http://192.168.1.1/PortTrigger.htm

Check firmware version is up to date.
as of today Firmware Version: 1.02.1

Linksys firmware/driver/platform download page
http://www.linksys.com/download/

Still getting the long delay on double clicking the icon.
Can see some features right away, like downloads.
Others like menu and app bar at the top is not visible.
I've got 2Gb RAM and 3.4GHz P4...........

Any other help?

I trust the WAG54G issues help. I hope I help at least someone, as I pulled my hair out with it!.

Cheers

Gazza

Your response is more than greatly appreciated. I'll try to get a more experienced person to view your situation & try to see if we can sort your situation out. Cheers. Lotr

The one minor detail problem re: finding "an experienced user" is simple...

A genuinely experienced user is going to say that, unless the person with the problem is running a moderate-sized network setup, THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO REASON TO HAVE SP2 INSTALLED ON A PERSONAL MACHINE.

Subtle, huh ?

Salut Gazza, seems weird! I see three possible reasons for now:

1) there is some corruption of the Java JRE (try installing 1.4.2 instead http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/download.html)

2) there is a video driver issue, try finding updated drivers for your garphic card at the manufacturer site.

3) there is a bad stick of RAM (highly possible with 2GB). Try removing half of the RAM and launch LW, if it is still slow, try with the other half of RAM.

All for now...
Bonne chance

Ursula perhaps we should sticky that point! lol But this person's issues 'might' be beyond that, something else indeed perhaps.

Red face MOre thoughts

Et viola,

mon ami, le problem ce ne pas deux aux trois.

I have eliminated the driver error, by updating it and even using an older driver.

The memory issue should also then affect other apps running and not just LW?

Last night I waited 20 mins for all the features to appear and then it was fine.

This morning I waited 30 mins and still could only see the botton half of the download window, but could not click on any lines.

on a more serious note (:-)) is Ursula for real?

Cheers et merci mon amis

Gazza
