Connection Problems I installed LW yesterday and am still having problems connecting. Tried to delete the .limewire, however I am prompted to reinstall after doing so. Changed my preferences to MS 2000, still no results. Uninstalled through add/remove hardware, still nothing. Also set my firewalls to accept Gnutella and tried unsuccessfully to download the version of Java recommended. Currently running: MS Win XP Java Plug-In 1.4.2 No Zone alarm |
Can you give us a total desciption of your set up: 1. XP SP1 or SP2? 2. ram? 3. HDD space available? 4. Connection type? 5. Modem & router brand name & model numbers? 6. Where are you trying to connect from (home, school, work, etc.)? These details are vital if you want us to find out what your connection problem is. What do you mean you had difficulty downlding Java. You mean the Sun Java 1.5? here! 3rd on the list (take the JRE) |
Connection Issues OK, I hope this is what you need... I am running Windows XP Home Edition SP2 off my schools' wireless internet service. We currently have a wireless network as well as a VPN. My wireless LAN card is a Dell TrueMobile with 11 mbps (or something like that). Have a Java Plug-in v 1.4.2, and 2.19 GHz, 384 MB of RAM. I THINK my modem is a PCTEL 2304WT V.9x MDC. 21.35 GB of free space on my hard drive. As for the Java downloading problems, I can get almost all the way through the process but an error pops up everytime: ERROR 1311. Source File not found: C:\WINDOWS\Installer\MSI20.tmp. Verify that the file exists and that you can access it. Looked around for it, used search function for it and could not find. Let me know if you need more information, and thank you so much for your help! |
Have a look at the Sticky at the top of this section about MSI install errors. Update your installshield engines. Then try again to downld Java. Don't use the net or your computer for anything else during this time. Your computer needs 100% focus on the installation process & be patient. Installation doesn't take too long. I have doubts about where you want to connect from however. Many schools block p2p. Which version of LW are you using? I'd recommend the most recent version 4.4.1 it has better firewall detection & setting. I just noticed this post which might interest you about Sun Java: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...threadid=33264 |
Connection fixed? Don't ask what happened, but my LW just started working when I restarted my compuer. I swear I didn't even do anything with it! Thank you so much for your help, the advice was much appreciated! However, I was using Morpeus before this and the download times for LW are DRASTICALLY slower. Is this normal? Thanks again! |
Not if you optimise LW with the latest Java & these hints: A well set-up LW can start to automatically continue its dwnlding after it's settled down perhaps 2 out of 3 times you open LW. Optimising LW & Maximising Uplds & Dwnlds A (1st post only) & also Part B which is even better & last & least are search & dwnld hints. The latter one I've been thinking about re-writing for some time. That's just for playing it safe. eg- I show all speeds & qualities. eg: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...028#post116028 |
Back to Square One (LW will not connect) So my LW was working ok last week and now I am unable to connect. I feel like I have done everything possible and the program just does not like me. LW 4.4.0 J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 (but I am not quite sure if it is running) Win XP SP2 (I think?) University Wireless Network and VPN (both of which are set to allow Gnutella and LW) Modem speed (I have no idea, sorry..) 27.8 GB on my C drive with 20 GB remaining Deleted and reset preferences folder (about 100 times) Should I uninstall and reinstall AGAIN? Your advice is always appreciated! |
I'm a bit dubious of university connections. So many uni's block p2p. So you're lucky you can connect. With a wireless connection it sounds as though you're probably firewalled. Wireless devices often use an internal NAT firewall (or other type.) May I suggest you try the new version of LW 4.4.4: http://www.limewire.com/english/content/download.shtml for the free version. Or your personal downld page for pro. |
No connect My university does not block p2p...YET. Downloaded the 4.4.4 to no avail. Now I have a new desktop folder labeled "incomplete". Should I uninstall and start over? Don't know what to do with the "incompelte" folder. |
Where did the incomplete folder come from? If it was placed there during installation then that means you set the downld folder to the desktop. Which is not a good idea. Shortcuts to your downld folder are better. Else, just use the Explore button in LW Library window to open the Saved Files folder. Your old incompletes should be fine. If you install over the top of your previous version (ie: the installer deletes it 1st.) Then your other folders will be safe so long as you didn't remove the files called download.dat & bak which are the LW downld preferences. Those are very important. Yes uninstall & reinstall. (There is an uninstall option under the Start>Programs>LW menu.) By the way, in your Tools>Options>Advanced>Firewalls, how do you have it set? |
