Basic Version/Installs w/No Problem/Opens w/Has to Close We downloaded the newest basic version. Yes, older version uninstalled. The newest version installs with no problem; however, after clicking finish and to open this program it immediately has to close. No major error message, just the Microsoft needs to close due to problem encountered. The Gillette Family |
So, no other person has installed this new basic version and when opening the program it immediately needs to close...without having even opened????? If yes, what did you do to fix the problem? |
A little more information would help. What windows vesrion and sp? what cpu? how much RAM? what Limewire version? what Java version? what display adapeter? are you connected to the internet when trying to open LimeWire? |
4.9.11.0 downloaded now. Uninstalled previous version including registry. Not well-versed on this java stuff, but noted during last week's version that it installed with java. Last week's version the program opened without any difficulty and we used the progam. This 4.9.11.0 version also installed with java, but this time just as it was going to open the error, or message, from Microsoft stated that Limewire encountered a problem and needed to close. NOTE: A search (Windows XP Home) shows java in a lot of areas. A search in RegSeeker shows java in a lot of areas as well. I have not deleted, or otherwise tampered with this java stuff since I do not know whether it is an essential part of XP, or other programs>> absent Limewire. BTW, J2SE is the java of which downloads by itself when installing Limewire version. |
Hmmmm from your description I see 2 potential issues that may or may not be causing the problem. Uninstall LimeWire this way in XP start>all programs>limewire>uninstall 1st seems you have a bad java installation. You can remove your java by going to start>control panel>add or remove programs ---find java and remove. You can download the latest Java version from this link. http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/download.jsp JRE 5.0 update 4 is what you want. I would suggest downloading the offline installation and save it to you comp. There have been problems with the online installations. The other may be your display adapter you can search the forums here for it, and possible sollutions if the removal and reinstallation java didn't help. Install the Java 1st then install LimeWire. |
Thank you "fabion". I will do so now and post the results one way or the other. If you're not on-line, perhaps you can stop by when you have time. Again, thanks! |
No go! Don't understand how a prior version can work like a charm and this one refuses. Funny, the very first version we downloaded last week installed along with the java and with no problem. Most likely, we will not go with the paid pro version. |

quite frankely, we are not paid, nor do we represent LimeWire LLC, nor do we HAVE to support you. we are volunteers doing our best. so, i really could careless if you bought it or not. however, if you find LW useful, its recommended for you to upgrade and pay/donate the money they ask. it is open source, they do give you a free alternative to the paid. if you find no use out of it, you are recommended NOT to purchase pro.i think it says this right before you buy it. LimeWire has tens of millions of users as a userbase. and since alot of them never show up here, we can assume the installation on those machines went rather well. the problem is usually specific to one person on their configuration. [rant] (i reserve the right to blame the users for the products use and fitness for any purpose, including but not limited to the use of nonuse. i also reserve the right to blame the users if they mess up or cant configure their software properly, including but not limited to viruses, network config, firewalls, learning curve, newbishness and ignorance.) hmm, sounds kinda like the GPL preamble doesnt it? i like it! ;) i would also like to say that newbies dont bother me. i personally LOVE answering NEW questions, but when they fail to realise it should ONLY be stages of your life, not a lifestyle, this is what makes the experienced users frustrated... [/rant] btw, that rant is not directed to anyone here particularly in this thread, i just felt like expelling that. ;) |
I am 48 and retired. The purchase would have been made for my son 13. I greatly appreciated the person who helped us to the extent he could. Where were you sir when your beta professional knowledge could have been used to resolve this issue. I think that my words were not out of place in light of the fact that a paid for product most likely would have ended in the same result. |
