having trouble installing limewire

trying to install limewire. but install locks up. after the box that asks to allow limewire past the firewall and access the internet, the box appears that says "Please wait . . . if there is no progress for several minutes, please restart the installer" and underneath "beginning download". I have to ctrl-alt-dlt and end task where it says limewire installer not responding.
I'm running win-me
512mb ram
Internet connection is Cable

You will probally have to install Limewire manually check the link below.

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, that thread in the link you provided did not produce any positive results. When I did a search, there was no folder named ".limewire" in the search results.
If this helps this is the java version I have : Version 1.5.0 (build 1.5.0_04-b05)

Grandpa August 20th, 2005 07:35 PM

I just looked at what I told you where I said Lime wire it should have been Java you may need to uninstall Java and reinstall it manually. Usually java is the problem when the symptoms you described are present. After you install java manually install LimeWire. Go back to the link and follow the instructions for java in there.

chipsfan1 August 20th, 2005 09:48 PM

tried uninstalling and reinstalling java.
Limewire still will not install.
When you say "manually install", do you mean something other than double-clicking on the LW install icon on my desktop?

Grandpa August 20th, 2005 09:57 PM

Yes go back to the thread I provided earlier and download java when it ask you do you want to save or run click save. You can save it to your desk top or wherever you want,
Once you have downloaded it go to where you save it and click on it then click on run and follow the instructions. After Java installs you should be able to install LimeWire. If you have any problems just post here I will try to help but sometimes it takes me a while to get back.

chipsfan1 August 20th, 2005 10:49 PM

So far nothing. LW still will not install.

Grandpa August 21st, 2005 08:45 AM

When you tried to install Java did it install. I do not know if ME is the same as XP but go to start/controll pannel/add and remove programs and see if java is in the list.

chipsfan1 August 21st, 2005 08:54 AM

Yes java does show up in the control panel add/remove programs list.
The java version is : Version 1.5.0 (build 1.5.0_04-b05)
I appreciate your patience in trying to assist me.

Ok we are going to try one more thing uninstal 1.5 and go back to the link above and get 1.4 and manually install it. Some people have trouble with 1.5

chipsfan1 August 21st, 2005 09:41 AM

uninstalled java 1.5 and installed 1.4
java shows up in all the right places.
However LW still will not install.
how frustrating.

just alittle note to grandpa, the installer has changed. the first pre-installer doesnt require java. its just a little stub installer that downloads the real installer from the network then runs it. the second post-installer is what actually does all the work. untill someone gets to that stage of installation, all of your previous helpfull guides are rather useless.

although i would have thought the same if i didnt know that either.

but good work on trying to help. atleast you have the patience unlike me ;)

the only help that i would have been able to give with this problem is to disable all firewall software including but not limited to winXP SP2 firewall.

that may have been the problem here. but the installer is pretty new so it may have some unnoticed bugs still awaiting to be found. but sofar i have had complete success with it. great download speed too. maybe a sticky should be posted about this problem with a link to the offline installer?

Grandpa1 August 21st, 2005 11:12 PM

Thanks for the explanation ultracross I new something was differed with this one when I read the first line of chipsfan, I had never seen that before.

It doesn't work for me even the full version(offline installer)Others solution???

Grandpa August 31st, 2005 07:15 PM

Try turning off all you firewalls if that doesn't work I don't know. You could try uninstalling LimeWire and edit your registry delete all references to LW in your registry and all files and folders in your C drive. Then try re installing and I do not know that this would work either. If you do not know your way around in your registry don't even attempt it. You can really mess up your computer if you do not know what you are doing.
