trouble w/ Java Runtime Environment

When I was installing Limewire, the installation was fine until it got to the part where it was getting Java Runtime Environment. After the installation a message popped up saying that I would have to get Java Runtime from the website. When I looked to see if Limewire was installed I saw that it was but when I clicked on it to use it a message popped up saying that Limewire was unable to load Java Runime Environment and that I need to go to java.com and get a new copy. I tried to download a new copy but I was unable to do so. Any ideas anyone?

Use your Add/Remove control panel to remove Java. Then download the "Offline" version which is about a 17 MB download: http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/download.jsp (take the JRE) which is about 4th on the list. ie: Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 8

Dear LOTR,

I tried to uninstall Java using control panel (xp-sp2) and I kept getting the same error message after clicking remove - it told me it was already installed. I repeated several times. Any suggestions? I am thinking of using the offline version and installing over the remnants of current installation (I blew all of it away except one file, ssv.dll which I will need to reboot to safe mode to get rid of.

Thanks!

Offline installer version is always recommended. Not sure why you can't remove it. But it does sound like there must have been a problem with the original installation of it. So yes, I guess install over the top. A utility to cleanup the registry is this free one http://www.ccleaner.com/

sorry for confusion with the two threads. I found this which may be helpful:
http://ict.cas.psu.edu/Training/howt...s-i586-p-s.exe

This link takes you to a slightly different version of java - and this one works!
the difference you can see is in the file name - it contains the letter -p- in it, and allows to install English only (good idea for me LOL) and also optionally the google toolbar. Java is now installed with this version.
