Lightbulb Windows Installer Workaround -- SOLUTION

I have seen a few references to problems with the Limewire installer for Windows and I have encountered this since 1.8 (including 2.1.3). The installation works fine on Solaris and Linux, but I want to use this on Windows when I am stuck at a Windows location...

My first response to the problem described below was to shell out a few bucks for the Pro version in the event the glitch was with the bundled adware. This didn't solve anything (but I still consider it $8.50 well spent -- I really like that they've included the multiple-peer-simultaneous-download similar to what FastTrak networks/clients have.

<strong>PROBLEM:</strong>

<ul>
<li>[0] Double-click installation file.
<li>[1] InstallShield Wizard automatically begins installation progress.
<li>[2] Comes to "Downloading file INSTMSIW.EXE".
<li>[3] InstallShield dialogue pops up saying:
<tt>--
An error occurred while downloading the file
http://www.installengine.com/Msiengine20/instmsiw.exe.
What would you like to do?"
--
</tt>
<li>[4] Clicking 'Retry' continues to fail.

(note: Even after we fix this problem, we run into another problem with another installation component the next time we try to install. More on this next...)

<strong>SOLUTION:</strong>

The problem seems to be with the URLs that the installer uses. Or how it uses them.

<ul>
<li>[0] Open your browser and manually download and install the instmsiw.exe file from this URL:

<a href="http://www.installengine.com/Msiengine20/instmsiw.exe">http://www.installengine.com/Msiengine20/instmsiw.exe</a>

<li>[1] Open your browser to the following URL. You may need to do this through MSIE (ugh). I tried downloading this file (probably from a different location) via LimeWire.com's website FAQ and the file was corrupted and refused to install. The URL below is correct. Manually download and install it or, using MSIE, select 'open' during download instead of 'save'.

<a href="http://www.installengine.com/isengine/isscript.msi">http://www.installengine.com/isengine/isscript.msi</a>

<li>[2] Reboot your OS.

<li>[3] Install LimeWire.
</ul>

One additional note:

If any step of this fails, you may need to follow the steps to specifically allow access to DCOM for your installing user account (Administrator). The steps are available at the URL below:

<a href="http://www.limewire.com/index.jsp/profaq">http://www.limewire.com/index.jsp/profaq</a>

<em>To set your DCOM permissions to the necessary values, follow these steps:
<ul>
<li>[0] Launch Dcomcnfg.exe from the Start, Run option.
<li>[1] Go to the Default Security tab, Default Access Permissions section and click Edit Default.
<li>[2] Now set the privilege "Allow Access" for yourself from the drop down list.
<li>[3] Click ok and close Dcomcnfg.exe
<li>[4] Run the setup again.
</ul>
</em>

I did everything you told here, but when I try to open instmsiw, it says that I have a wrong version of system. Can you tell me what I should do now? Please?

I am running win2k sp1. I was getting an 1628 error or something like that after the instmsiw.exe and isscript.msi ran. I completely removed limewire and java, reinstalled java, downloaded and ran the instmsiw.exe and isscript.msi, then after reboot i turned off Adaptec, the programs for my mouse and keyboard, and anything else i could. Then i installed on a fat32 partition (i was origianlly trying to install on NTFS), and it worked fine. hope this can help someone.

Thanks very much for the info. I would be surprised if the file system change is what helped -- I would guess that it was the install of instmsiw.exe and isscript.msi -- that's what I would first try if you're looking to implement this solution. It's also a lot easier -- Uninstall LimeWire and Java Runtime Environment, reinstall Java, install instmsiw.exe and isscript.exe, restart and run the LimeWire installer again.

Adaptec has also come up a curious number of times, so that might be it as well.

Thanks again!

Thank you for finally solving this.

I'd been experiencing the same problem with every version since 1.7c. The following fix cleared the 1608 install error:

Uninstall LimeWire and Java Runtime Environment, reinstall Java, install instmsiw.exe and isscript.exe from the links provided in previous post (choosing "open" instead of "save"), restart and run the latest LimeWire installer again.

Notes:
Adaptec was installed and running during the installation with no problems.

I am running Win2k with the latest updates and patches.

I have tried the afore-mentioned solution 4 times only to denied each and every time. I hope the developers can resolve this issue in a newer release, soon.
