Angry ADS and SPYWARE

Just installed the newest version of Limewire. I don't like the little popup that tells me to upgrade to PRO every time I start it, but that's just the tip of the iceberg.

The new version INSTALLS CYDOOR WITHOUT PERMISSION. For those of you who don't know, Cydoor is advertising spyware, and reports your browsing habits back to its parent company. If you have RegCleaner, you'll see it listed there. The only other clue is a cydoor uninstaller in the Limewire directory.

I found a .dll in my windows directory, too.

Then I found something called TopMoxie in my program directory. Searching through its directories confirmed that Limewire put that there too, part of something called LimeShop. Removing LimeShop from Add/Remove Programs did not delete the offending directories and its programs, however.

Are the guys at Limewire trying to scam every penny they can before the recording industries and/or government goes after them? Maybe. Anyway you cook it, though, they're just plain greedy.

Thats fine. But keep your damn spyware off my computer!!!

Thumbs down Re: Ads and Spyware

You are absolutely right. If you want to make money from LimeWire, make everyone pay for it. Don't install spyware programs like topmoxie!!!

Angry Spyware

Thanks for this info. I did see that Top Moxie on my PC and wondered what it was.

Is this why I an constantly getting those stupid pop up ads?

Icould be wrong, but, isn't something like that an invasion of privacy?

Cool Anti - Spyware

Yes... Limewire has always installed spyware. More specifically - CYDOOR which Symantec's products have always considered as a Trojan Horse. If you are truely offended by this instrusion then you can get a freeware product by LavaSoft called AD-AWRE which will identify it, as well as most other spyware programs, and assist you in removing it from your system.

BE AWARE... Limewire will no longer run once you've done this. Effectively you are choosing not to use Limewire anymore.

I've tried other file sharing products and still think Limewire is far superior, so one needs to make a consious decision as to how much of an intrusion this CYDOOR is and what it means to them.

Hope this helps...
