Search improvements

XoloX is a great program, the best file-sharing program I have used so far. I just wish there where more search options like the ability to filter words out of your search. For example search for “porn” but filter out any results with the word “anal”. Options to select file extension and minimum file size would also be useful.

I’m also a little worried about the auto update feature. It works well but I’m concerned about possible security holes.

Security holes

Well, it looks like there are. I've had users downloading the update-file from my computer. What if I had changed my local version to be a trojan + xolox. The user would not have noticed, unless xolox automatically contacts xolox.nl to check for md5 checksums or so. Does ist???
I've switched off the autoupdate feature and download updates manually

searching for words with only 3 letters

Hello #2 on this site,

you asked for a way to search for strings with a length < 4.
It can be done by just adding a "-" i.e. a minus sign after the word. For example, if you are looking for "vie" just search for "vie-" and you will find what you need.

I found this out when I tried to find songs of "ska-p", and got all sorts of matches containing "ska" and the letter "p". This is a pity!
I'd request that as a feature for the network, that you can search for things like "ska-p" and get better matches. You might even surround your string with quotations marks to make sure you get an exact match. What about it?

best regards,
B.

Re: Security holes

I also have a very bad feelin with the automatic update, as long as we don't know which security feature is implemented or if there is any. I keep it disabled.
Hmm, as soon as a newbie asks in this forum "why is Xolox named Bearshare now", I know that somone has renamed bearshare.exe to xolox.exe... no, I'm only kidding. :) :) :)

Hi there,

We implemented security features to asure the right file is downloaded for autoupdate.

I am not going into all isues, but I can assure you that only we can initiate an upload-download and there are security measured taken.

Greets,
Pasman

Good!

Good!! There should be security measures in this software! I'm glad the developers thought of this, as I am not sure that some other client developers have.......

Good?

With respect to the Xolox team programing abilities, but "security by obscurity" gives my paranoid brain some reasons to keep the autoupdate feature disabled. :)
I know that giving more details about the auto update security checks may or will open doors for a possible trojan programmer.... maybe we see us on #xolox again and dicuss this there. :)
