Moderators

There are senior members on the forums who serve as Moderators. These volunteers keep the board organized and moving.
Moderators are authorized to: (in order of increasing severity)
Move posts to the correct forums. Many times, members post in the wrong forum. These off-topic posts may impede the normal operation of the forum.
Edit posts. Moderators will edit posts that are offensive or break any of the House Rules.
Delete posts. Posts that cannot be edited to comply with the House Rules will be deleted.
Restrict members. This is one of the last punishments before a member is banned. Restrictions may include placing all new posts in a moderation queue or temporarily banning the offender.
Ban members. The most severe punishment. Three or more moderators or administrators must agree to the ban for this action to occur. Banning is reserved for very severe offenses and members who, after many warnings, fail to comply with the House Rules. Banning is permanent. Bans cannot be removed by the moderators and probably won't be removed by the administration.

The Rules

1. Warez, copyright violation, or any other illegal activity may NOT be linked or expressed in any form. Topics discussing techniques for violating these laws and messages containing locations of web sites or other servers hosting illegal content will be silently removed. Multiple offenses will result in consequences. File names are not required to discuss your issues. If filenames are copyright then do not belong on these forums & will be edited out or post removed. Picture sample attachments in posts must not include copyright infringement.

2. Spamming and excessive advertising will not be tolerated. Commercial advertising is not allowed in any form, including using in signatures.

3. There will be no excessive use of profanity in any forum.

4. There will be no racial, ethnic, or gender based insults, or any other personal attacks.

5. Pictures may be attached to posts and signatures if they are not sexually explicit or offensive. Picture sample attachments in posts must not include copyright infringement.

6. Remember to post in the correct forum. Take your time to look at other threads and see where your post will go. If your post is placed in the wrong forum it will be moved by a moderator. There are specific Gnutella Client sections for LimeWire, Phex, FrostWire, BearShare, Gnucleus, Morpheus, and many more. Please choose the correct section for your problem.

7. If you see a post in the wrong forum or in violation of the House Rules, please contact a moderator via Private Message or the "Report this post to a moderator" link at the bottom of every post. Please do not respond directly to the member - a moderator will do what is required.

8. Any impersonation of a forum member in any mode of communication is strictly prohibited and will result in banning.

9. Multiple copies of the same post will not be tolerated. Post your question, comment, or complaint only once. There is no need to express yourself more than once. Duplicate posts will be deleted with little or no warning. Keep in mind a forum censor may temporarily automatically hold up your post, if you do not see your post, do not post again, it will be dealt with by a moderator within a reasonable time. Authors of multiple copies of same post may be dealt with by moderators within their discrete judgment at the time which may result in warning or infraction points, depending on severity as adjudged by the moderators online.

10. Posts should have descriptive topics. Vague titles such as "Help!", "Why?", and the like may not get enough attention to the contents.

11. Do not divulge anyone's personal information in the forum, not even your own. This includes e-mail addresses, IP addresses, age, house address, and any other distinguishing information. Don´t use eMail addresses in your nick. Reiterating, do not post your email address in posts. This is for your own protection.

12. Signatures may be used as long as they are not offensive or sexually explicit or used for commercial advertising. Commercial weblinks cannot be used under any circumstances and will result in an immediate ban.

13. Dual accounts are not allowed. Cannot explain this more simply. Attempts to set up dual accounts will most likely result in a banning of all forum accounts.

14. Video links may only be posted after you have a tally of two forum posts. Video link posting with less than a 2 post tally are considered as spam. Video link posting with less than a 2 post tally are considered as spam.

15. Failure to show that you have read the forum rules may result in forum rules breach infraction points or warnings awarded against you which may later total up to an automatic temporary or permanent ban. Supplying system details is a prerequisite in most cases, particularly with connection or installation issues.

Violation of any of these rules will bring consequences, determined on a case-by-case basis.

Thank You! Thanks for taking the time to read these forum guidelines. We hope your visit is helpful and mutually beneficial to the entire community.

Lightbulb Define which files in search belong to one file

Let's say I searched for a file x.avi, which has exagt size of 500 megs.
I find with this exact size these files:
x.avi
x_divx.avi
x_HQ_Divx.avi
...

I know they are all the same file with different names. But they are listed as separete items. Is it possible to tell XoloX, that all these files are the same so that he can try to download from all these files?

You will never see any two hits from a single search with the exact same file size. All hits that match your query and have the same size are counted as the same and increase your score.

I think you're wrong with this one seeker.

I think that only files that have the same filename AND filesize
are grouped. So i.e. you can still find 'BLABLA.avi' and 'BLABLA [DivX].avi' both having te same size.

And if, like in this case, you know that both files are in fact the same file...it will be a handy option if you can say to the program that these files are in fact the same, and that it can use both of these 'source-groups' to download the file.

I have done a LOT of testing with this software. In a single search, no matter what the search was for, I have NEVER seen two files with exactly the same size. I HAVE seen files with a slightly different name come up with the same size as what I'm downloading when searching AGAIN, but all this means is that someone with a differently named file that matched my search responded first.

Take, for example, Wheetus, Teenage Dirtbag. This is from my resumeinfo.txt file (with all the extra junk removed):

teen <- search term(s) used
x:\path\xolox\downloads\wheatus -teenage dirtbag.mp3 <- local filename when complete
4094080 <- file size

Xolox desn't re-search by filename, but rather by your original search terms. This request is moot.

This isn't true - I've currently got 4 versions of the same file in my download list, they all have the same filesize and close names and they're all completed differently. They've been there for 2 weeks and their respective percentages complete add up to well over 100%, yet no one file is more than half downloaded.

I'd love to be able to drag and drop them together and have Xolox realise that they were the same file - that way they would be done by now. I'll of partially wasted my time downloading 3 of them.

If you run a seperate search, then yes, you can add the same file into your download list. Same size, same name and size even. What I was saying, is that for any given single search you will never see two files with the same file size. Again, I'm talking about the Search page, not the Transfers page.

A quick question before I respond to the following statement... Why are you searching for and downloading something that is on your download list already? Are you at least using different search terms than you used the first time?

This would be somewhat useful with the current downloading scheme, but a more useful request might be to allow for multiple, seperate, searches for a single file, and the ability to recognize if a file is already on your download list before adding it. Unfortunatey, this would require some sort of unique file IDing, such as the CRCs XoloX used when it first startd (slow) or SHA1/MD5 or some such thing¹. I think that eventually this will be integrated back into the program, but for now you have to pay attention to what you are downloading to avoid duplication and wasted bandwidth.

Nope - because people go online and disconnect all the time, frequently I want a file where there is only a few copies available (in total) with different filenames, every time I seach I'll come up with a renamed version of the same file and add it to my list. The files complete over the course of a fortnight or so (as the host and myself are rarely connected for the same period), often the one that only had 12% complete will finish first and I delete the other ones, which are often nearly complete.

Because I'm going for files that are usually very new I often feel like I'm wasting connections to the hosts for doing this - other people could be getting the file in the time I'm wasting with my half dozen partially completed files.

As I said, I do it deliberately; I don't mind wasting the bandwidth as it's really rare that 2 differently named copies are on at the same time.

Is there any way I can unite the filenames (if I got them under multiple searchs at different times) in the log file?

I doubt that CRC checksums would really fix the problem when it comes to mp3s. There could be five identical versions of a song, but if there is id3 tag information in each song, it has to be identical in each song. Different id3 tags will add a different number of bytes to each file, changing the file size, so you can't rely on that, either.

For relatively small files, such as mp3s, there is little that can be done, however given that the typical file size IS so small, one can download it fairly quickly without difficulty.

For larger files (e.g. movies, divx, etc.) there are likely to be LESS original varsions floating around. Any bonehead can rip a cd track and compress it to an mp3; there's no real magic to it. But, I don't know many people who can rip a dvd, crunch it with divx, and share it.

Don't do this.

Do ONE search and select multiple items that seem similar but have different file sizes (different recordings but the same original content).

Look in your transfer view and pause the less desirable download and hope that the best download completes.

If all of the people who have the first recording go offline and step in front of a bus then you can unpause the less desirable copy. Sometimes the first recording is bad and you need to go back to the 2nd choice too.

REALLY, REALLY try not to do multiple searches for the same item. If they have been renamed since your last search then Xolox will allow you to add it to your download list again even if the original download is still in progress.

Sometimes your download seems to be stalled although the score indicates that there should be more people out there with the file. Don't fret about this. The score may be aritificially high (cached data?) or Xolox may be in the process of searching out some new hosts. Have faith that your download will pick up.

I too was cought in this problem before and with Seekers help I have trained myself not to do multiple searches.
