I recently burned a couple of SVCDs last week and found out a couple of things:
a) You get a choice of burning your SVCDs using NTSC (US TV picture system) or PAL (UK picture system), so if you burned a PAL SVCD accidentally you would not get a picture, I am assuming that you are in the US.
I use a multi-regional DVD player so that I can play DVDs from anywhere in the world, which helps, but I understand that multi-regional players are not popular or readily available in the US.
b) It is best if you burn SVCDs onto CD/Rs and not DVD disks or CD/RWs.
I must point out that though Nero is relatively easy to use it can seem difficult if you don't have a manual to guide you. If this is the case then download the manual and the instruction for burning DVDs and SVCDs from the Nero website and give them a "once over". I am sure they will make things very clear for you.
