Definitely not. Selfishness hardcoded into the software
actually drives away new users before they can get
comfortable and become contributors. The first few hours or
days are when people decide whether to stay or leave.
Gnutella is a sharing network, not a trading floor.
"Freeloaders" represent only 13% of the network right now
[down from above 30% over the past few years, by the
way], but those are the people who bring growth and new
files to the network. If we start finding excuses to exclude
some of the people some of the time just for numbers, we'll
inevitably end up with widespread cheating and billions of
junk files in our searches.
Also, don't forget the thousands of people who simply
cannot risk sharing yet. Someday they might get the chance. |
