lol, its not really that complicated. Im living in a house where they have a computer upstairs that has a modem connected to it and they are connected to the internet through their local area network. its an adsl connection that has an ethernet cord running from their computer to the modem and then from the modem to the wall phone jack. this modem also is a wireless router and is sending out a wireless signal. I am downstairs with my laptop using that wireless signal to connect to the internet because my laptop has a wireless card in it that enables me to pick up on wireless signals.
